Ponoko.com challenged me to design something interesting using their laser cutting abilities, the result is the Ponoko Shelf, designed in London, cut in New Zealand, North America or Europe depending upon the purchaser’s location and assembled by the end user. It is the use of these localised manufacturing hubs that attracted me to the project, foretelling a time when everyday people will be able to commission designs from around the globe and have them produced locally.
Made from laser cut American Cherry veneer MDF shelves and bending plywood panels. The shelving is finished in clear polyurethane, with stainless steel fixings. Curvaceous and lightweight, the Ponoko shelving unit notable for its beautiful detailing.
